There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it.

Samraksha- 2005

Samraksha 2005 : District seminar on environmental protection
Date& Time: 30th Sunday, 4.30 P.M
Venue: Alva’s college, Moodubidri

I was there to be acquainted with :)
The event was remarkable indeed. Topics discussed were customary… environment protection, endangered wild life, & sustainable development. But surely got to know some interesting facts about our own surroundings, plant & animal life around us & how we can use this simple knowledge in understanding the climatic conditions& weather forecasting.

Dr. Mohan Alva’s unique collection of antiques, paintings, photos & statuettes were special attraction. He has the assortment of over 1000 ganesh idols in different forms & poses. Laudable creativity …He himself performed a hunter man dance & his students presented some other folk dances.

The main objective behind my presence there however was to explore Moodubidri. The day went thriving. The historic 1000 pillars Jain Basadi temple is splendid. It’s marvelous architecture & sculptures…

Then, the visit to Soans farm which is actually a fruit garden. It covers about 80 acres of land…Rambutans, different types of cherry trees, pineapples grown in the long rows, Malaysian bamboos…& yes, the durian fruit tree..Aaaaah. But unfortunately, the season was off, & could not see any durians. Mr. L.C Soans, who is the proprietor of the farm, was describing each & every fruit tree & while speaking about durians, he said it tastes great and mostly popular among South East Asians. People here do not prefer it because of its bad odor. He recalled an Englishman saying “It tastes like heaven but smells like hell”.

The final visit was to Shobhavana (in the place called Mijar), the garden of medicinal plants & herbs. It is only 7 years Old as it was built by Dr. Alva in memory of his deceased wife. One can see the beauty of nature revealed there. The rare species of plants useful in the treatment of various diseases & also the plants corresponding to our stars, moon signs, zodiac signs, planets, the saptharishis, gotras and what not...… Have only heard about these plants before… now, got to see it. Another amazing thing was to see the panchamukhi rudraksha tree which is otherwise found in sub tropical climatic regions like Himalayas.

Hmmmmmmmmm…
It seemed as if the whole day was dedicated to the nature’s grace.
